Forever Plaid - Not!

I like the jacket, but oh am I ever tired of sewing with plaid! I don't think I was made to work with so much match-up. I literally get dizzy from staring at all those lines...

As you can see the shoulders are a bit on the wide side. If there's a next time-without plaid- I'll take in the shoulder point. This jacket is pretty much straight out of the pattern. It's BWOF 1-2009-114B.

I took in some in center back to curve the seam in toward the waist, and also shortened the sleeve about an inch- I have very short arms :)) The sleeve vents with working buttonholes were also added.

This is how I'll wear it most often, and maybe a rowdy gray tee- I live in Tinseltown after all :))

The buttons are mis-matched to get out of the"perfect" mode...

I was planning to add my label and a chain at the neck, but due to the neck facing it just didn't look right. I love the piping and silk lining- don't think I can ever buy anything but silk for lining anymore, it just feels sensational.

The shoulder pads were customized according to Roberta Carr's book, and I really like this method. They shape so nicely and make the garment hang correctly without any fudging.

DD is feeling better, but now she has pink eye :( Giving her the drops is not a lot of fun... And I was planning on taking her picture since she has a meeting with an agent next week. With that red droopy eye I think I better wait :))

Here she is inside Sprinkles Beverly Hills, the hottest cupcake place in LA. The line outside is always long, so she got to wait inside while we were waiting in the cold:))

  4. At first I thought you were showing the BWOF garment and putting it on your wish list! LOVE your jacket. Though I feel you on the plaid. I've done several plaid projects recently and boy am I ever sick of matching freaking plaids. And yet I can't stay away...

  9. You make me jealous, what a great jacket. I want one too now in a plaid. Despite all you say about working with the plaid(and I'm a matchy-matchy girl too), I love the casual look in the last picture. Don't know if I have time for it, but must remember this one. And the inside is as perfect as the outside. WOnderful job, as always.
Glad to hear your daughter is in general feeling better. Hope her eye is quickly better too. And for yourself: you really should be sewing something in a plain fabric now to calm your eyes!

  10. Oh!!! I LOVE THAT!!! I have been eyeballing that jacket for awhile. I am just a little scared to try it because I have not had alot of experience sewing jackets. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and give it a shot.

  11. What a fantastic jacket. As Sigrid, I love the way you wear it with jeans. The pink touch inside and outside, give it a touch of softness that is often lacking in ready to wear clothes. A beautifully balances creation.

  12. Love the way you'll wear it most often. Your jacket is superb. Love it!
I have some plaid waiting in my stash. I wonder if I'll ever try to sew it, the matching process might not suit my astigmatism ;o)

  14. Your jacket is lovely. Great use of the plaid on the curved bands. I am a sucker for plaids and BWOF always seems to have a few in their winter issues. Pink eye, I remember dealing with that one when my kids were little. Highly contagious and the child has to stay home from school til 24 hours without the "pink" has passed. I hope your daughter is "picture perfect" soon.

  15. The jacket is splendid. And your handling of the "plaid" was skilled and tactful. Sorry you feel the need to give up on sewing plaids.

Your DD is too precious. I'm sure she will be back to here delightful self next week.

  19. What a totally fabulous jacket, Birgitte! Having a Monk-like personality :) for matching plaids definitely paid off in this case. Hats off to you!! I love everything about it. It trumps Burda's version.
